August 2022 Main Challenge - Adventure and Map

Hello everyone and welcome to another month of lovely challenges from More Than Words.

This month we are inviting you to go on an ADVENTURE with us and one thing that would come in handy on an adventure, is of course, A MAP!

We also are excited to share the second issue of our new digital magazine - Artful Pages - more details below!

But first, let's look at this month's art journal challenge!

Our challenge has two parts, please use both prompts to inspire you:

Word Inspiration:  ADVENTURE
Creative Challenge:  ADD A MAP

As previously mentioned in the Art Café Facebook Group, we have suspended all sponsored prizes until further notice due to the current world situation.

Helpful Tips For The Challenge

We would like you to be inspired by both parts of our challenge
- our word inspiration ADVENTURE and our creative challenge - ADD A MAP.
We can't wait to see what you do and if you need more inspiration, you might find our new magazine useful!

As mentioned at the top of the post, we are excited to share the second issue of our new digital magazine - Artful Pages - which is a new way of looking at our challenges and inspiration, as well as being able to add more value for our readers which we are not able to do in our current formats.  So here's a look at our second issue which is available to flick through online just like a real magazine.  The magazine contains more about our challenges this month, our Design Team inspiration,Guest Designer interviews, studio spaces, arting in the wild and more!  Check it out and see for yourself - we would love your feedback!

Let's see what our lovely new Design Team have created this month...

ANN CHUANG

Ann says:  I envy the backpacker life. I hope one day I can travel the world and experience a life of adventure. For the background, I used tissue paper which has a map on it. Apply Distress inks to the surfaces of tissue paper using a blending tool. The focal points are the earth die-cut, airplane, and some ephemera connected with trips.

ELLE - EOTC

Elle says:  Adventure usually means having to travel somewhere so you need a map to make sure you're on the right track, and a travel yoga mat just in case! I found this postcard of South America so that was my destination, but I needed a more detailed map, so hidden under the postcard is a much bigger map.  You can see all the details on my blog and socials.

HEATHER MCMAHON

Heather says:  What a great challenge MTW has for you this month!  I layered a torn MAP onto kraft cardstock then used one of the awesome sketchbook images by Deb Weiers at ArtStacks to make the point that we all need to choose our own ADVENTURE. We're all unique and we shouldn't think that we have to tread the same path as others.  I hope you'll join us.

HELEN HOLLINGER

Helen says:  I love adventures!! It keeps one's perspective in check, and allows us to be more tolerant of others. To this day, when I say to my 32 and 28 year old sons, "Let's go on an adventure"... they both laugh at me ... and still moan!  The background map is of some of our actual adventures when we lived in Cairo, Egypt when the boys were young.

KAT PALECZNY

Kat says: Everyone's greatest journey is their life. In my art work, I pay attention to following my own path, even if it has a lot of twists and turns. I have added binoculars to recognise good roads.

"Destination Adventure."
Lisa says: As my workdays get longer, my mind wonders to past travel destinations. Pure joyous Adventures, spent embracing different cultures, connecting with new friends and wandering back streets of towns in far off places.

SARAH DORGERE

Sarah says: Going on an ADVENTURE means hitting the road and letting yourself be carried away by your desires. Our family dreams are to be able to travel around the world but in the meantime we love taking our car and visiting our beautiful country of France. I worked the background of my art journal with a world MAP stamp

SHARON FRITCHMAN

Sharon says:  My family has always enjoyed traveling! What it has taught me over the years is that the best ADVENTURE brings you home. Because after-all, there's really no place like home! When making this art journal spread, I used a subtle vintage MAP of my home town as part of the background.

SUNILA MAHAJAN

Sunila says:  Adventure makes me think of Travel and how long it has been since I've travelled due to COVID. It reminds me of all the fun trips I've taken with my family and those were dream places. This page is about that. I've used a pattern paper with maps for my background, and incorporated the word Adventure in the quote.
