October 2022 Main Challenge - STRANGE and GET INKY

  Hello everyone and Happy Halloween!

This month we are inviting you to get into the Halloween mood and be STRANGE and GET INKY.

We are also saying goodbye to our lovely DT member Helen and welcoming new DT member Heidi on board.

We are excited to share the latest issue of our new digital magazine - Artful Pages - more details below! But first, let's look at this month's art journal challenge!

Our challenge has two parts, please use both prompts to inspire you:

As previously mentioned in the Art Café Facebook Group, we have suspended all sponsored prizes until further notice due to the current world situation.

Helpful Tips For The Challenge

We would like you to be inspired by both parts of our challenge
- our word inspiration STRANGE and our creative challenge - GET INKY
We can't wait to see what you do and if you need more inspiration, you might find our new magazine useful!

As mentioned at the top of the post, we are excited to share the latest issue of our new digital magazine - Artful Pages - which is a new way of looking at our challenges and inspiration, as well as being able to add more value for our readers which we are not able to do in our current formats.  So here's a look at our latest issue which is available to flick through online just like a real magazine.  The magazine contains more about our challenges this month, our Design Team inspiration,Guest Designer interviews, studio spaces, and more!  Check it out and see for yourself - we would love your feedback!

Let's see what our lovely new Design Team have created this month...

Ann says:  My Strange Halloween page. I made the background using Distress Inks and added a lot of Halloween designer paper and elements to this page.

Visit Ann:

Elle says:  I used acrylic inks for the background and Distress inks for the pumpkins. The pumpkins are made from book paper and then I drew some of my cats popping out from behind them. My quote "I myself am strange and unusual" seems to fit.

Heather is on vacation this month.

Heidi says:  Happy Fall, Y'all!! This page was a lot of fun to put together and definitely getting me ready for Halloween. For my inky inspiration I used Lindy's Starburst Spray (pigment ink) and some Distress ink from Tim Holtz. Hopefully, the only inky darkness I will get lost in is in my art

Kat says: On my page I used the word Strange in my quote 'Somewhere there is someone looking for the strange you are' and was inspired by the layers of ink to create my background with Distress Inks.

Lisa says:     INKY backgrounds in vibrant neon.  Allow for the STRANGE, to get their freak on.

Matilde says:  I'd like to make a page with positive message. Many people are scared to be themselves. Don’t try to be someone else, just be yourself! I used my favourite distress INKS for the background and for stamping.

Rachel says:  Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.

Rox says:  I created a collaged art piece for the October challenge using some ArtStacks papers.

Sarah says: I was inspired by the colors of fall and the weirdness of this season. For that I worked my background with Lindy’s spray INK and used the word STRANGE in a quote.

Sharon says:  When I think of October, I always think of Halloween!  I used pink, orange, and yellow INKS from my stash to make my background. The image of the woman and her black wings are from the ArtStacks "All Dressed Up" and "Wings and Things" stacks. I completed my page with a STRANGE and eerie quote!

Sunila says:  It's good to be weird, and like the strange things. For my page, I was inspired to use Ink layers using Distress Inks and Acrylic Ink. I've used the word Strange in my quote, and created a scene inspired by Halloween and Harvest. It's time we honour the strange little things we love.

As previously mentioned in the Art Café Facebook Group, we have suspended all prizes until further notice due to the current world situation.

Special Guest Spotlight on HEIDI MATTESSICH September 2022

This month, we are very pleased to welcome back Heidi Mattessich, who is Guest Designing for us for a second time after being one of our July 2022 winners

This time, Heidi has created something special for both our Main and Mini challenges so we hope you enjoy her take on our September challenges and do please visit her social links which are listed in her Artist Bio.

Artist Bio

Hi guys!

My name is Heidi. I live in sunny Florida with my handsome hubby, my youngest kid (the older 2 are in college) and our sweet little dog. I work as a physical therapist and group fitness instructor, but you can find me crafting in my free time.

I love creating art journal spreads and mixed media projects and, every once in a while, a scrapbook layout. Over the past year I have had the honor of being a Guest Designer for More Than Words Challenge in April and being on the design team for Miniature Luxuries and Papers.

My style is always evolving as I spend more time getting my hands dirty in paints and inks and seeing others' artwork online. I hope you like the projects I made for the September challenges!

Q & A with Heidi

What's your favourite September memory?
For me, September is the start of fall and going back to school, so I have many fond memories of getting my kids ready for their first day and taking pictures of them. Also, my birthday is in September and last year my husband and sister threw me an amazing surprise birthday weekend with my parents and all 3 of my kids in town to celebrate. I'm pretty sure there is video of me crying happy tears.

What usually inspires your journal pages?
I am definitely inspired by nature, but I also love a great color palette.

What's your favourite way to break a blank page?
I like to start with building a background with either collage papers or a basic patterned paper and white washing it with a heavy bodied white gesso.

What's your favourite journal?
My favourite is the first journal I started.  I love looking back to see my progression.

Heidi's Interpretation of our September Main Challenge

Heidi says:  Playlist is the word for the main challenge.  I started by thinking of my own playlists and how I feel when I listen to them.  This process helped me come up a color scheme and I looked for ephemera that went along with playlists and the colors.  Once I had everything collected, I just played around with the layout and layering, and then it all came together.

Heidi's Interpretation of our September Mini Challenge

Heidi says:  Song is the word for the mini challenge. I had recently gotten some items from Stamperia's new line Desire which is inspired by Tango and Flamenco and I thought this fit perfectly with this mini challenge.  In my ephemera collection I found a black and white picture of this lady in a fancy dress that worked well with the theme.  Once I was found a quote using the word song that matched my tag, it all flowed together.

Thanks for sharing your September memories, interview answers and of course your beautiful journal spread and your tango inspired tag with us Heidi!  We really enjoyed interviewing Heidi this month and hope that Heidi's beautiful work inspires you to enter September challenges!
