Happy New Year from all of us at More Than Words! We are welcoming in the New Year with our amazing 2021 Design Team (old and new), our wonderful Sponsors (old and new), some very important changes to how our challenges run, and of course, our first Challenge of 2021!
This month, as we say goodbye to the old year and hello to the new year, we are asking you to think about (new) BEGINNINGS and to add washi tape to your project!
As always, our Main Challenge is based on a word inspiration and a creative challenge. The word inspiration can appear on your project or not but you must show that you have been inspired by it. The creative challenge must be used on your project!
Word Inspiration - BEGINNINGS
Creative Challenge - WASHI TAPE
Helpful Tips For The Challenge
What does the word BEGINNINGS inspire you to create? Is there a new baby in the family, a new job or a wedding? Perhaps you have a New Year's resolution you want to record or maybe you’re beginning a new, healthier lifestyle. The New Year always inspires change, and new beginnings. Let's see yours!
For a fun touch, finish your project with some WASHI TAPE or any other tape.
Design Team Inspiration
And now let's look at our first DT Inspiration for this month:
ELLE WILSON
The New Year is often a time when people decide to make changes in their lives. "Out with the old and in with the new" and so it makes me think about new beginnings, and what changes I might make this year. Change is often scary but this year I am going to trust in the magic of new beginnings and see what wonderful things the future might hold. I painted a leaf background using watercolours and acrylics as new beginnings also makes me think of "new leaf" as in turning over a new leaf. On the right are the turning leaves of Autumn and on the left are the fresh green leaves of Spring. I used a leaf print washi tape to match my watercoloured leaves on my background. The washi tape is actually holding my book together which is something I often use it for or to attach more pages in my journal. What do you use your washi for?
BEGINNINGS made me think of the first time doing something. I wanted to use an old photo with my vintage papers so I found one of me when I was first starting kindergarten. (I might be a bit 'vintage' but I'm not as ancient as the papers - one of them is 93 years old!)
I added WASHI in strips around the photo, using a music print to tie in with the background paper. The words "Happy Times" are also printed on a washi tape.
“Celebrate endings—for they precede new beginnings.”The word 'beginning' inspired me to look at the past year.. its been the most difficult year for many.. For many it has been a struggle to make the ends meet, or feeling of being lonely to losing someone dear.. its definitely not the year to celebrate.. Ofcourse it was not all negative.. we have learnt many things or started with something that one always wanted to do..and with this thought lets enter 2021 with a joyous heart, with a hope for things to get better.. here is to the new beginnings Cheers and hugs to you..
Kat Paleczny: The word "BEGINNINGS" inspired me to create a cover for Art Journal, the beginning of the year is a good opportunity to start a new notebook. I decided to create a new page in it at least once a month.
For the creative challenge of "WASHI TAPE" I used a washi tape with a floral motif for my background, I didn't think the tapes would make such a great addition. I think I will use them more often in my projects.
LISA OXLEY
Lisa: The word "Beginnings" inspires my spirit to encourage the richness of fresh ideas and feed their growth.
MARIE JOHANSSON
Marie: The word "BEGINNINGS" inspired me to create a Art Journal spread about that it feels like we should draw a line over 2020 and just leave it behind. 2021 can only be better. I picked quotes that I find fit with the feeling that a new year is a new start with a lot of possabilities.
For the creative challenge "WASHI TAPE" I tore washi tape in little pieces and added to my background

The word BEGINNING inspired me to meet my son and my daughter, the beginning of this brotherly love. I used AB STUDIO Papers. I used the WASHI TAPE in my background work.
